An Olympic Moment

At the time of his 7  Gold Medal win in 1972, Mark Spitz put out a now-famous poster. My mother got one and hung it in the laundry room in the basement. I guess you’d have to know how proper and correct and quiet she was about all things to appreciate how shocking that was. Not long afterward, she added a poster of Englebert Humperdinck in a tuxedo.

  1. He was one of my brushes with greatness sitting at a blackjack table in Vegas with my husband and another guy … Mark Spitz. I just wanted to stare and drool, but when my hub decided to give Mark “pointers”, he left. Sigh.

  2. It would be like my mother telling me she didn’t’t really appreciate my dad’s very athletic body until one of her friends mentioned it. I was about 15 and was freaked out.

  3. Update: this post got 5,000 hits in three days from search engines looking for “Mark Spitz”. Internet, sometimes you bother me.

FYI – there were 0 searches for Englebert Humperdinck.
